The Crafty Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time of year, it is the chance to spend with those people who are most important to you. It is also a chance to spoil them a little too, giving them some gifts and treats to make them smile.

The trouble with Christmas is that as great as it is, it can also be a time when we overspend, when we end up getting ourselves into short term debt just for the sake of buying a few treats. In fact, it is thought that on average, people in the UK will spend £379 on presents for their family, however, this doesn’t take into account if they have children as this will be likely to make the costs rise.

So, what can we do to try and combat this? How can we save ourselves some money during the festive season, as well as give the gifts and decorations that we use a unique and personal touch?

Make your own cards

Christmas cards are not something that everyone decides to send, however, for those people who do, it can be quite expensive to buy all those cards. One great way to save yourself some money, and to get crafty too, is to make your own cards. You could do this yourself, or you could make it an entire family project, something that will work really well if you have kids that love getting arty. They could perhaps put their handprint on all of the kids, or, if you have the time, you could get them to draw a personal picture for each person. Not only is this great fun to do, but it also means that you are going to save yourself some money, you may even find that the recipient of the card feels really special when they learn that it was made just for them.

Give a Christmas gift that they can make themselves

Not only can you try out making something crafty to give to people, but you could take this one step further and encourage other people to become crafty this Christmas too. Two great ideas for these types of gifts are cookie, cake or hot chocolate jars. These are incredibly easy to make, essentially all you need is a large jar, such as a leftover mason or jam jar. You then fill the jar with all the ingredients that the person is going to need to make their gift (minus anything that needs to be refrigerated of course), along with the recipe too, and then you have the perfect gift idea. You can decorate the jar to make it look special and you can even tailor it to match in with what each person likes the most. For some recipe ideas why not take a look at Taste of Home which has plenty of great options for you to consider.

Or give them a gift that you have made just for them

Whilst the above idea is great because it is almost an interactive gift, sometimes it can be nice to give someone something that is made just for them. Handmade, thoughtful and unique, it really is a great way to show someone that you care. There are a variety of gifts that you can make for someone, that whilst being entirely handmade do not appear cheap or that you don’t care enough to buy them something. One great idea that we have seen online is homemade candles. Not only are they easy to make, but they also make for a great gift too. If you want to learn more about how you can make them yourself then this website  has a great guide.
Get crafty with your decorations

Does the idea of making Christmas decorations at home fill you with you dread? Do you have visions of awful decorations having to be shamefully displayed around your house? Well, this doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, you may find that you can get extra crafty with your Christmas decorations, you just need to follow a guide and think carefully about what you want to make. There are loads of projects and guides out there that you can follow, however, one of the best that we have seen has to be Crazy Little Projects  which has a whole lot of different Christmas crafty projects that you can try out for yourself, perhaps even getting the whole family involved. Best of all, these projects mean that you don’t have to worry about a house full of tat.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways that you can try to have a crafty, if not a little cheaper Christmas this year. It also shows that just because you are trying to make things home-made or that you are trying to save yourself some money, that it doesn’t mean that you can’t still have a lovely festive season, or that you can’t treat those who are important to you.
